It started with a phone call.

I was working a wildfire helicopter crew shift. Ody was somewhere else. He was nine, maybe ten. And he called me — not to chat, not because something was wrong — but to ask one question:

He'd done one before. A while back. And he hadn't forgotten it. He wanted back in.

I almost laughed. But something shifted. Because here was my youngest — not asking for a toy or screen time — asking to create something real. To be part of something that mattered.

I filed it away. And kept working.

Then my daughter called.

She's almost thirty. Smart, capable, hardworking her whole life. One of the best people I know.

I didn't have an answer. Because she was right. And I knew exactly why.

I taught her everything I knew about money. Work hard. Debt is dangerous. Save what you can. I gave her every rule I had.

What I never gave her was the reason behind the rules. The purpose that makes them worth following when life gets hard and the easy choice is right there in front of you.

That's not just my failure. It's a generational one. Most of us weren't taught purpose-first either. So we pass on what we have — the rules without the reason — and the pattern repeats.

After her call that day, already thinking about Ody's call, I went to work.

I've been an entrepreneur since I was a kid.

Selling pecans at 8 years old. Cinnamon toothpicks at school. Whatever I could turn into a transaction. The instinct was always there — earn by solving problems, protect what you build, use it for something that matters.

I've known for a long time that time isn't guaranteed. That's not pessimism. It's why purpose has always come first for me. Long before I could articulate it as a system, I was living it as a reflex.

Two phone calls on the same day made it impossible to ignore any longer.
